Theatre in Matlock

If you're looking for live theatre in Matlock, you've found us. The High Tor Players are an award-winning community of amateur players with a shared love of theatre, and we've been putting on plays in the town since 1939.

Where to see a show

Our main home is the Imperial Rooms, Imperial Road, Matlock DE4 3NL. We turn the hall into a theatre for each production, and from time to time we also perform in the surrounding villages.

A long Matlock story

We first met in 1937 at the High Tor Guest House on Dale Road, and our first production was Potbound by member Lilian Smee in 1939. Over the years we've played at Matlock Town Hall, Rockside Assembly Hall, the Grand Pavilion in Matlock Bath and now the Imperial Rooms.

  • Matlock Town Hall was our main home until 1979, starting with George and Margaret in 1944.
  • We played Rockside Assembly Hall from 1979 to 1988.
  • In 1953 we campaigned for a permanent theatre for Matlock. Read the press cuttings.
  • We've also toured to Youlgrave, Bakewell, Wirksworth, Ashover and Tansley.
  • We celebrated our 80th anniversary in 2017, and our 200th production, Jerusalem, is coming in April 2027.
